Coaches Out of Hand at Youth Game

February 16th, 2009 by Stacie | Print

“Last night’s game between Unity and Tuscola was just like any other, until witnesses say Unity’s assistant Coach Mike McCarty chest pumped a player from the other team, slamming him to the ground.”

What in the world? Why is it that adults are the ones who usually mess up youth sports experiences? We’re supposed to be nurturing our children, not causing problems. This incident at a youth basketball game left big negative impressions on it’s young 6th grade players. These players had to witness fighting, blood, and police at their own basketball game all because of a careless and highly inappropriate act by an adult, by a coach no less.

The superintendent hit the nail on the head when he said…

“It’s for the kids, and adult behavior has got to be under control and responsible, and it was totally irresponsible last night,” said Superintendent Michael Shonk.”

Coaches especially must serve as an example to the players. It’s pretty bad when the school’s motto is “respect yourselves and respect others” and you have a coach that does something as crazy as slam a player to the ground.

  1. Coaching softball Says:

Coaching entails big responsibilities, not only to their players but to the community as well. They do not only teach the fundamentals of any sport but they also teach other essentials of being an athelete. They build character and help motivate their players. It’s sad to hear news about these things.

A good coach for me is not only a mentor but a good role model as well.
